1. Ignoring the cut.

Grading the cut of the stone is the hardest characteristic to rate. Because of its difficulty, talking about the cut can lead to misunderstandings or ignorance but that doesn't mean it's not important, in fact it is the principal agent that determine the glow and sparkle of your diamond. Here are some common mistakes when it comes to the diamond cut:

  • Judging the cut by comparison. If you have four stones in front of you and you pick the one with the best looks it doesn't mean it is a well-cut diamond, it means that you choose the best option among the others. You'd better ask for the certificate to make sure of the official graded cut.
  • Choosing a deep cut brilliant. They may be less expensive, but they hide some weight on its disproportionate figure looking smaller than any well cut-diamond with the same number of carats.
  • Lack of inventory. In jewelries they show you what they have, and keeping well-cut diamonds on an inventory without flow is expensive, so they will try to sell you all there is. Unlike them, in Dídiamant we have more than 10000 options of different diamonds that will definitely fit what you have in mind.

2. Only trusting your eyes.

Clarity and color aren't easy to classify when the eyes meeting the stone are not trained. To rate the clarity you must check the brilliant with a magnifying glass but that does not assure you that you will detect all the inclusions and to identify the color you'd better be comparing at least two diamonds to tell the difference. In any of both situations, inspect the diamonds without a ring set that way you will reach a better.

The recommendation is not to trust your eyes unless you have the certificate in your hands and if you have any trouble detecting the inclusions or recognizing the color ask for help. In Dídiamant our gemologists are trained and ready to help you, to provide you the best advice to make the right decisions.

3. Believing the sales person is an expert.

The person behind the desk might know more about diamonds than you, there could be some exceptions but in many cases it is not that way. Some might be GIA Graduated Gemologists and some might be just sales executives. That's why you should only buy the product and information from someone you trust, because since the Federal Trade Commission established that the characteristics evaluated by jewelry retailers can vary 1 grade from what it is rated by a qualified evaluator, they can manipulate grades to boost sales. To make sure you get the exact grading of each characteristic ask for the certificate. In case you are looking for more information, need some extra help or want a second opinion ask Dídiamants experts for free, we will be pleased to help you out in such an important matter.

4. Looking under the wrong light.

Jewelries are point of SALES, their objective is to sell and only to sell. Therefore they are prepared with the best light for their diamonds to perform spectacularly and to catch your eye. To see the real glow and sparkle of the diamond try to get close to a window or a place with daylight, even some standard office lighting will help you see its true shine.

If you are buying online, you don't have to worry about making this mistake but hoping that what you are buying will fulfill your expectations. To make you feel unconcerned about that, Dídiamant policies include a 100% return guarantee for whatever your reason, you can weather choose to change your diamond for another one or you can ask for your money in return without problem.

5. Assuming all the certificates are the same.

If you are interested in an uncertified diamond then you won't have to worry about this, but if you are you should know that not all of them result with the same grading. Each laboratory has its own politics, some are pretty strict while others are loose. The most trustworthy and recognized one is the GIA Laboratory.

When it comes to GIA you should know you can find official reports and certifications made by GIA trained gemologists. The difference is that one is official from the laboratory and the other is from the gemologist, not the institution itself.

Now, if you are about to compare two diamonds make sure they are both certificated by the same laboratory, that they have the same quality and equal shape, otherwise it will be as if you compare two different things.

7. Taking the final price right away.

When it comes to the price, there is a remarkable difference between the ones offered in jewelries and the ones in online stores. It is pretty common not to find the price tag in jewelries, actually sometimes the prices are calculated by sales executives right in front of you according to what they believe you are willing to pay; in this case we recommend you to try out your negotiating skills to lower the price if possible, not taking the final price right away. But if you buy online, prices are lower, already set, the same for everyone and some times you can even find special deals.

To know if you will have to negotiate or just select a price you have to decide if you are buying online or not. Diamonds are never offered for less than their value wherever they are sold, but in jewelries they usually double the price due to the face to face service they provide, the rent of the place, the experience and everything included on it. The advantage is that you can see the diamond right in that moment when visiting a store. On the other way, online retailers give you a personalized service through chats, emails or phone to educate you and help you out with your decision, they provide detailed information about your brilliant, some like Didiamant include the return guarantee and for instance lower prices.
